Diaphragm Pumps

Air‑Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) Pumps

AODD pumps move almost anything—from corrosive acids and flammable solvents to high‑viscosity slurries and solids‑laden waste—without shaft seals, priming issues, or shear damage. Pumping Solutions stocks the West Coast’s most complete lineup of 1/4″ to 3″ aluminum, stainless steel, and plastic AODD pumps from Wilden, ARO, Yamada, Graco, and more. Tell us your chemistry, viscosity, solids size, and flow/pressure targets and we’ll size, quote, and ship the right configuration—often same day from California, Washington, or Arizona.

Why Engineers Choose AODD Pumps

  • Run dry & dead‑head capable without damage
  • Self‑priming (dry and wet)
  • Shear‑sensitive fluid friendly (paints, inks, pharma slurries)
  • Handle solids & abrasives—no mechanical seal to fail
  • Portable and air‑powered (no motor or VFD required)
  • Explosion‑proof / ATEX compliance for flammables

How We Size AODD Pumps (Fast & Right)

1) Air Supply & Consumption

Match your air line to the pump inlet (1:1) and size the compressor for the target flow/pressure. Undersized air supply is the #1 cause of stalling and underperformance.

2) Viscosity & Flow Corrections

High viscosities dramatically reduce the published water‑based flow. We apply each manufacturer’s viscosity correction factor to get real‑world throughput.

3) Elastomer & Wetted Material Compatibility

We align diaphragms, balls, and seats (PTFE, Santoprene®, Buna‑N, FKM, EPDM) with your SDS—balancing chemical resistance, abrasion, temperature, and FDA/3‑A demands.

4) Solids Handling & Shear Sensitivity

We check solids size & and select appropriate ball/seat clearances. For shear‑sensitive media (resins, emulsions), we keep velocities and cycling under control.

Common AODD Pump Applications

  • Chemical transfer – acids, caustics, solvents, oxidizers (PTFE/PVDF builds)
  • Water & wastewater – sludges, slurries, entrained air
  • Food & beverage – syrups, sauces, sanitizers (FDA / 3‑A options)
  • Paints, inks & resins – high viscosity, shear‑sensitive fluids
  • Mining & minerals – abrasive slurries & tailings
  • Oil & gas – flammables (ATEX / explosion‑proof air valves)

Parts, Kits & Accessories

  • Diaphragms, balls, seats (PTFE, Santoprene®, Buna‑N, FKM, EPDM)
  • Air valve rebuild kits
  • Pulsation dampeners & surge suppressors
  • Filter‑regulators & lubricators
  • Stroke counters & batch controllers

Cross‑Reference an Obsolete or Competitor Model

Send us your tag or model code (e.g., Wilden P4/PTFE/SS or ARO PD15R). We’ll cross to an equivalent, in‑stock configuration or upgrade elastomers for longer life at the same price point.

AODD Pump FAQs

Can AODD pumps run dry?

Yes. AODD pumps can run dry and even dead‑head without damage, making them ideal for transfer, tote unloading, and batch operations where supply can drop intermittently.

What diaphragm material should I use for corrosive chemicals?

PTFE diaphragms (typically backed by EPDM) offer the broadest chemical resistance. For abrasive slurries, elastomers like Santoprene® or Wil‑Flex® often last longer.

How big should my air line be?

Size your compressed air line to match the pump’s air inlet. A restricted air line is the most common reason AODD pumps stall, underperform, or won’t reach rated flow.

Can I meter or throttle flow with an AODD pump?

Yes. You can throttle using the air regulator, or add a batch controller/stroke counter for repeatable dosing. Avoid choking the liquid discharge too aggressively as it can affect performance and diaphragm life.

Do you stock FDA / 3‑A compliant AODD pumps?

Yes. We carry FDA and 3‑A sanitary AODD pumps for food, beverage, and biopharma applications, with polished 316L stainless and CIP/SIP options.
